Which of the 12 Executive Skills do you have? Everyone is born with a set of cognitive functions called “Executive Skills”, because they help people execute tasks.eval There are 12 of these skills and certain ones are found more frequently than others in certain jobs or functions. Each person typically has 2 or 3 of these brain functions that they are strong in and 2 or 3 that are their inherent weaknesses.eval These skills are: 1) Response Inhibition The ability to think before you act. 2) Working Memory The ability to hold information in memory while performing complex tasks. 3) Emotional Control Ability to manage emotions to achieve a goal or complete tasks. 4) Sustained Attention Capacity to maintain attention to a task in spite of distractibility. 5) Task Initiation Ability to start projects with undue procrastination. 6) Planning/Prioritization Capacity to develop a roadmap to arrive at a destination or goal. 7) Organization Ability to arrange or place according to a system. 8) Time Management Capacity to estimate how much time one has and allocate it well. 9) Goal-Directed Persistence Capacity to have a goal and follow through to completion. 10) Flexibility Ability to revise plans in face of setbacks. 11) Metacognition Capacity to stand back and take a bird’s-eye view of yourself to make changes in how you solve problems. 12) Stress Tolerance Ability to thrive in stressful situations. It is likely that you can read the descriptions and determine most of your own strengths and weaknesses. Always on time? Strong in Time Management. Speak too soon? Low in Response Inhibition. And so on. If a certain job matches a person’s strengths, it is what we call a goodness of fit situation. And when this happens, the job is much more natural for the person since the tasks align with how the person’s brain is hardwired from birth. When certain jobs require what are a person’s inherent weaknesses, those are called effortful tasks since they are unnatural for that person. The key for career success Sooner or later in a career, a person will generally come across both situations, those that fit their Executive Skills and those that don’t. The key for career success is knowing which situation is which and acting accordingly. For example, when certain jobs require a person’s weaknesses, there are several options: Do those tasks first while fresh, since they will require more energy. Find someone who is strong in that Executive Skills, and delegate the tasks to that person, since it will be more natural for them. Partner with someone with opposite strengths and weakness, and have each party focus on tasks that align with their strengths. The ultimate solution is to maneuver into positions that play to strengths. This works for interacting with and managing others as well. Along a career, a person will meet people with some of the same strengths as well as some with the same weaknesses as them. Career success can depend on who gets which tasks and who faces the best ‘goodness of fit’ situations. Those with a match of Executive Skills strengths and job can end up as the perfect fit. An unexpected lesson about procrastination My second son was born a year and a half ago with hemifacial microsomia. That means half of his face is deformed. Im not linking to a description of the birth defect, even though I know you will Google it. Im not linking because the pictures are always the worst cases. He does not look like the pictures. Still, I knew he was deformed the minute he came out. The nurse handed him to me, and his face looked uneven. I tried to tell myself that maybe it was because babies heads are scrunched right after vaginal birth. His Apgar score was fine, but after a few hours, when my husband left the hospital to go home to sleep, I went nuts. Summoning every available professional there were very few that late at night to tell me a diagnosis. In the morning, they did emergency tests on his hearing, because his ear was deformed, and on his breathing, because the inside of his mouth was deformed. Then someone came to do a kidney test because the kidney and ears develop at the same time during the pregnancy and when one is deformed the other often is, too. The baby did not pass his hearing test and one kidney did not look right. The doctor told me that the kidney problem is common and he just wont be able to play contact sports. I must have looked really bad because social workers started streaming in. I dont remember what I said, but my brother remembers my first phone call to him: I am crying so hard it takes five minutes for him to hear that the baby is deformed. Then, when I calm myself down enough, I tell my brother that my husband will die when he hears this so I have to hide it from him forever. This is when my brother says, Im coming there. I say, No. I dont want you to see the baby. The world can publish ten thousand books about how parents love any child they get. And its true. But its also true that theres a moment, a short moment, when you think you might die from the news. Right after the phone call to my brother, my husband came back, and I said, The baby is deformed. He said, Are you kidding? You think I cant see that? I know. We took the baby home two days later. We diagnosed him by looking at pictures on the Internet. We were absolutely stunned to see a whole population of children who had the same weird deformity. I brought him to New York Universitys Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. Hemifacial microsomia is very complicated because it can affect eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart and nervous system, all at once. Many specialists work together to come up with a plan for surgery. At my sons doctors appointment, I presented him at the front of a room, with a social worker next to me, while fifteen doctors asked questions and examined him. Heres what happened: My sons surgery was performed by one of the best teams in the world for hemifacial microsomia. All the doctors were incredibly compassionate. The support team of social workers, speech pathologists, and administrators always knew what my son and my family needed before we did, and they figured out how to get it. My son has a scar, and his face is a little uneven, but many people dont even notice at first glance. I told myself that I should write thank you notes. The team at NYU changed my sons life, and helped my family at a time when we really, really needed it. That was six months ago. Its been on my to-do list for six months. It moves up and down. A few times, when Ive been really industrious, writing thank you notes has been at the very top, the only thing on the list, and I still didnt do it. Last week I admitted to myself that my son will probably need more surgery once his jaw grows to full size. And I thought, Oh my gosh, I had better write those thank you notes or we wont get into NYU for the next round of surgery. So tonight, I finally wrote them. There were a lot. Each note made me cry. I thought about how much people did for us. How kind they were. How fragile I was. How tiny my son was. Everything. Every sentence made me cry. And I learned a bit about procrastination. I had been so angry at myself for waiting so long to write these thank you notes. But I do not procrastinate because I am lazy or unorganized. I am not those things. I procrastinated because I could not bring myself to think about the operation again. I was not emotionally capable of writing the notes until tonight. Sometimes procrastination is the best tool we have for taking care of ourselves.

For Your Career Journey - Two Heads Are Better Than One To uncover as many career ideas as possible, I suggest both brainstorming and asking others about their career journeys. Here’s why: There is no website out there that provides a complete list of career ideas, so getting firsthand information from others often adds helpful insights. Brainstormings with those who know you can pinpoint your skills and suggest how to use them. They can review previous jobs and how you handled them. They have a history with you. At the same time, friends and family may unconsciously try to pigeonhole you. So take their feedback, say “Thank you,” and spend some time mulling over their comments. Those who don’t know you well â€" such as a career coach, participants in a coaching group, or former co-workers you were merely acquaintanced with â€" can provide a more objective opinion. My experience is that in every coaching group, someone says something I would not have thought of; and my clients have gotten their best career ideas from another participant in the group. David came to a group coaching session with great news. He had invited five of his close friends for dinner the previous weekend. For about three hours they brainstormed career ideas for him based on what they knew about his personality, experience, and talents. By dessert, he had thirty new career ideas! Of course he wasn’t going to consider all of them; but the point is he had many more ideas than he had before. Asking others about their journeys differs from brainstorming in that the conversation is about “them” instead of about “you.” When you are clarifying your dream job, it’s helpful to talk with others who are also in the process of doing the same thing or who have already completed the process. They can share valuable tips from first-hand experience. Start by looking among family members, friends, or someone in your professional network who loves their work. Ask how they identified what they wanted to do, the successes and failures they dealt with, and what they learned from both. Often we don’t fully understand how our talents and experience can combine into unique career ideas. Others see connections we don’t see, because it’s harder to be objective about our own experiences.             Action step: Think about David’s approach.
